Illegal matzo factory broken-up

By Michael White, New York Daily News Monday, January 21st 2008, 4:00 AM

The NYC Fire Department shut down an illegal Brooklyn matzo factory Sunday, officials said.

About 150 residents of the Kent Ave. building in Williamsburg were forced to vacate their illegal flats in the 11-story building that is zoned only for manufacturing, officials said.

The factory's basement held potentially explosive coal- and wood-burning stoves and grain silos, officials said.

Residents were given six hours to leave and were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

An adjacent building that housed a religious school and catering outfit, but was zoned only for manufacturing, also was shuttered, fire officials said.
