"On the Map" scores a victory for Israel's place among the nations

"On The Map," the Cinderella-story of the
1977 Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team which rose to win the European League Championship, is a documentary which shows modern Israel achieving its place among nations. Akin to the 1984 US Olympic Hockey team's "Miracle on Ice," Dani Menkin's film shows the politics surrounding little Israel's international vaunt just 4-years past the Munich Olympics tragedy. It is a treat for Jews and Gentiles alike.

Maccabi Tel Aviv's then team captain, Tal Brody, a New Jersey-raised, NBA draftee who made aliyah to play in Israel, made L.A. the final stop on his US tour promoting the movie, appearing alongside co-producer, Nancy Spielberg and director Dani Menkin.


Tal Brody spoke with JewTube.Info about the warm reception he receives in America from so many Israeli emigrants.

The 30th Israel Film Festival is running in Los Angeles from November 12 through Wednesday the 23rd. "On the Map" screens again Sunday in Encino, California at 5pm. Writer/director, Dani Menkin, reveals in detail to JewTube.Info, what went in to making this film. 



Here, the organizers have a 10-day (to be repeated in NYC) opportunity to show films (dramatic and documentary) which portray Israel in a favorable light to the American public.  Israeli-American co-owner of  Cinemoi Film Channel, Daphna Ziman, reacts to seeing "On the Map."

Organizer, Meir Fenigstein, told JewTube.Info they appeal to a mostly American (not only Israeli-American) Jewish and Christian audience. Most of the audiences we have participated in over the past number of years have been predominantly Israeli.

Preceding the feature picture, a short comedy was screened. Actor, Itzik Golan and director, Koby Axran spoke with JewTube.Info regarding their "An Average Story," which depicts an "average" Israeli couple attempting to capitalize on their sudden unearned celebrity.

Some Arabs want Egyptian judo to scrap scheduled Olympics match vs. Jewish-Israeli at Rio Olympics

An Egyptian judoka is being pressured on social media not to show up for his scheduled Friday-afternoon fight against an Israeli contender at the Olympics in Rio, the Hebrew news site nrg reportedon Thursday. 

According to the report, in spite of repeated assertions from the chairman of the Egyptian Olympic Committee that Islam El Shehaby will appear on the mat for his slated match against Israeli judoka Or Sasson – going as far as to warn the athlete that, if he fails to do so, his Egyptian citizenship will be revoked – calls from fans on Facebook and Twitter for him to shun the fight have been intensifying.

“You will shame Islam,” wrote one angry follower. “If you lose, you will shame an entire nation and yourself. We don’t want to think what will happen if you lost to an Israeli. Victory will give you nothing. How can you cooperate with a murderous nation?” 

El Shehaby , who is known for his extreme anti-Israel views, told Egyptian media outlets that he would make his decision closer to the fight. “The situation is very sensitive,” he said. “And I don’t want to discuss it.” 

The 2010 World Judo Championship bronze medalist in the over-100-kilo category is supposed to fight Sasson, winner of two silver medals — one in 2015 and a second in 2016 — in the European championships. 

According to nrg, Israeli Minister of Culture and Sport Miri Regev called on Egypt to “respect the spirit of the Olympics and act accordingly.” She also called on the International Olympic Committee to prevent the games from being “tainted by politics.” 

The controversy surrounding El Shehaby is not the first incident of its kind at the Olympic Games in Brazil. 

On August 5, the Lebanese delegation to the games refused to share a bus meant to take the athletes to the opening ceremony with the Israeli team. Subsequently, on Aug. 7, Saudi Arabian judoka Joud Fahmy forfeited her first-round match against Christianne Legentil from Mauritius, reportedly in order to avoid competing against Israeli contender Gili Cohen in the next round.

American gymnast, Aly Raisman, has revealed the music for her gold medal-winning floor routine at the London Olympics was a tribute to the victims of the 1972 Munich Games terror attack.

Aly was shocked when the judges announced her winning score of 15,600 points that made her the first American woman to strike gold in the Olympic floor exercise. Watch her historic gymnastic routine:


The 18-year-old said choosing "Hava Nagila" (Hebrew for "Let's Rejoice") - was a response to the International Olympic Committee's failure to mark the 40th anniversary of the tragedy.

And for Aly, from Needham, Massachusetts, she said it made her gold even more special.
'I can only imagine how painful it must be for the families and close personal friends of the victims,' she said.

Israeli athletes and coaches murdered by Palestinian terrorists

It began on the morning of September 5, 1972, with six days left in the Games, when eight terrorists stormed the Olympic village and raided the Israeli contingent’s apartment. Two Israeli athletes were killed and nine more were seized as hostages. They demanded the release of over 200 Palestinians serving time in Israeli jails, along with two renowned German terrorists. After a day of unsuccessful negotiations, the terrorists collected the hostages and headed for the military airport in Munich for a flight back to the Middle East.
