The 19th Annual Israel Day Concert in Central Park is expected to draw 20,000 people this year.
The event, which will be held at Central Park's Summer Stage on Sunday, June 3rd , takes place straight after the Salute to Israel Parade, and is dedicated in honor of the 45th anniversary of the Six-Day War and the re-unification of Jerusalem.
Dr. Joseph Frager and Dr. Paul and Drora Brody, organizers and chairpersons for the past 7 years, have announced the concert's themes:
1. Jerusalem united forever-- never to be divided again;
2. No further concessions of any part of the Land of Israel; and
3. Stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons NOW, before it is too late.
The concert, thought to be the largest Zionist rally in North America, perhaps the world, is sponsored by the Israel Concert-In-The-Park Committee, associated with Young Israel Chovevei Zion and the National Council of Young Israel. It pays special tribute again this year to the late Carl Freyer, who together with his wife Sylvia, founded the annual event in response to a call by Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Chief Rabbi of Efrat, to mount some form of protest to the disastrous 1993 Oslo accords.

MK Danny Danon, Deputy Speaker of the Knesset and Chairman of World Likud will return as keynote speaker. Wearing calf-high white socks for centuries off the field, a team of yeshiva bochurs try their skill on the diamond- that is, not gemology, but the baseball diamond. The Yankles is a movie about an Orthodox Jewish baseball team with a very unorthodox coach. Sibling filmmakers David R. Brooks and Zev Brooks co-wrote the script. Zev served as Producer, David helmed the direction of the film.

The Yankles comedy is about a hapless Orthodox Yeshiva baseball team that earns a ticket to compete in the college world series. The team hires Charlie Jones, played by Brian Wimmer (Footloose, Flipper) to coach. Charlie is a washed-up, ex-major league center fielder on parole for multiple DUI convictions and desperate to fulfill his community service. While The Yankles strive for success on the field, Charlie works to rebuild his reputation and relationships. Don Most of "Happy Days" plays a former baseball champ at odds with his rabbinical student son (Michael Buster).

The L.A. Jewish Film Festival last night concluded its week of screenings throughout the city with Jewish themed, "Dorfman," starring Sara Rue and Elliot Gould.
Actors and filmmakers spoke following several screenings during the festival, including Dr. Iddo Netanyahu, the brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Entebbe rescue-hero, Yoni Netanyahu, who flew in from Israel for the premiere of "Cohen on the Bridge," following the shiva for his father Benzion, the patriarch of the Netanyahu family.
Dr. Netanyahu appeared in and contributed his brother's letters to
"Follow Me: the Yoni Netanyahu Story." He also assisted in the
producing of the Entebbe-rescue, animated adventure, "Cohen on the
Bridge," whose director, Andrew Wainrib, accompanies Dr. Netanyahu in
this post-screening discussion, which Rob Eshman of the Jewish Journal
moderates.

The L.A. Jewish Film Festival premiered a week of screenings with "Tony Curtis: Driven to Stardom." A panel discussion, moderated by Hollywood columnist and historian, Pete Hammond, brought out anecdotes from family and actors who co-starred in Tony Curtis / Bernie Schwartz pictures, including Mimi van Doren and Sally Kellerman. Several movie colleagues and friends, such as Stella Stevens, also attended, through the coordination of motion picture and television research archivist, Marvin Paige.

Israel supporters, both Jew and Gentile, large and small, came out to celebrate a spectacular, 15,000+ person, community-wide festival commemorating Israel's Independence Day. The crowd was treated to ethnic Israeli foods (including Sadaf Brand), world music, drum circles, folk dancing and a 200-vendor village which showcased Israeli artwork, sculptures, jewelry, and Judaica gifts.

One of America's pre-eminent Israeli Independence gatherings, now called the Celebrate Israel Festival returned after a break last year from Woodley Park - back to its original venue on the Westside of Los Angeles. The event began with a a 1.5-mile free “Salute to Israel Walk” presented by StandWithUs. Hundreds walked from Rancho Park to the Museum of Tolerance and back to show solidarity with the State of Israel. A salute to Israel drive-by heralded the start of the walk with an automobile caravan of custom designed, 9/11 Tribute-“Fueled by the Fallen.”

Israel: Birth of a Nation is a History Channel documentary presented by acclaimed British historian, Sir Martin Gilbert. The documentary chronicles the events of the Israeli War of Independence (1948-1949) using archive film, photographs, and interviews with participants.
On May 15, one day after the creation of the State of Israel, the Arab armies of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon invaded the new Jewish state. The Arab forces were significantly larger than Israel's and were better equipped. Yet, coordination and organization were lacking and the Arab armies were often at odds with each other, seeking to incorporate territory from Palestine into their own states.
Despite their small numbers, the Jews were well-organized, well-disciplined and well-trained. The war was marked by long periods of fighting and temporary cease-fires. Finally, fighting officially ended in January 1949, at which time Israel held the 5,600 square miles allotted to it by the UN partition plan plus an addition 2,500 square miles. Trans-Jordan held the eastern sector of Jerusalem and the West Bank and Egypt held the Gaza Strip. From January to July 1949, armistice agreements were signed with Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria based on the frontlines as they were at the end of the fighting. These lines created the borders of the new state and as a result, Israel gained control of the areas which would have been part of the Arab state envisioned by the UN had the Arab world not gone to war with Israel.
At the time, Israel hoped that the armistice agreements would lead to official Arab-Israeli peace treaties. The Arab states, however, refused to recognize Israel's existence and negotiate peace and remained in a state of war with the Jewish state. They continued their economic, political, social and cultural boycott of the Jewish state which was instituted by the Arab League in 1945. The Arab economic boycott of Israel prohibited Arab peoples, companies and states from conducting business both with Israel and with other companies who do business with Israel. They also embarked on a campaign to isolate the Jewish state in the international community.
Some Arab leaders attempted secret negotiations with Israel. Tragically, some of them were murdered, including King Abdullah of Jordan who was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1951. The Arab states provided little help to Palestinians who became refugees after the war. Only Jordan offered Palestinian Arabs citizenship. Refugee camps were set up and maintained primarily by the United Nations and other international relief organizations.

Some ask the question, “Does Israel have a right to exist?” That is not a proper question since Israel does exist, is recognized by the United Nations and many other countries, and isno more subject to being so questioned than is the United States, Japan, or any othercountry. But there is a legal background to the State of Israel. The Declaration of Israel’s Independence, issued at Tel Aviv on May 14, 1948, recites the legal historythat led to the founding of Israel as an internationally recognized sovereign state:
The land of Israel was the birthplace of the Jewish people. Here their spiritual, religious and national identity was formed. Here they achieved independence and created a culture of national and universal significance. Here they wrote and gave the Bible to the world.

The post-WWI, European divvy of Ottoman lands granted 98% of Mid-East for Arab states and 2% (Palestine & Trans-Jordan) for the Zionist homeland in Israel.
Following World War I, the Ottoman Empire was carved into states, on the condition that 2% would go to re-establish the Jewish National Home in Palestine, Arabs accepted the all of the remaining the territory for their states. The Arabs later reneged, and the British stripped 80% of Palestine away from the Jews to create Trans-Jordan, despite the fact that all "Palestine" had been designated as a Jewish National Home.
Still, the status of West Bank of the Jordan River has never been resolved, but the currently applying law permits both Jews and Muslims to own land and reside there.
Daniel Doron contends that Moslem intolerance of traditionally subjugated Jews being equal to them or autonomous causes them to undermine the true history, present, & future of the Middle East.

Why did Mel Gibson choose to produce a cinematic depiction of the classic anti-Semitic "passion-play? In doing so, why did he patch together the most Jewish-incriminating interpretations from a variety of sources?

Hollywood screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is accusing Mel Gibson, his recent collaborator on a movie about Jewish revolt, of “hating Jews” and using him to deflect his anti-Semitic reputation.
In an explosive nine-page letter to Gibson obtained by TheWrap (read the full letter here), the screenwriter wrote that the director of “The Passion of the Christ” never intended to make the movie about Jewish heroism, called “The Maccabees.”
Instead, Eszterhas said, Gibson announced the project “in an attempt to deflect continuing charges of anti-Semitism which have dogged you, charges which have crippled your career.”
He added: “I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason you won’t make ‘The Maccabees’ is the ugliest possible one. You hate Jews.”
Mel Gibson shouted terrifying epithets at his houseguests during a rampage at his home in Costa Rica in December, according to a recording obtained by TheWrap.
Houseguest and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas provided the recording, and you can find it at the bottom of this story. (Editor’s note: Recording and quotations below contain highly offensive language.)
The release of the recording follows a public dispute between Gibson and Eszterhas. The screenwriter wrote a nine-page letter obtained by TheWrap, accusing the movie star of making continual anti-Semitic remarks, threatening violence to Grigorieva and detailing out-of-control behavior, including the rampage he described in detail.
Eszterhas' audiotape reveals a psychosis which may have been behind Gibson's depiction of "The Passion-play." Which Christians want Gibson to define the story of their faith? Christians interested in redeeming themselves from the silence of their faith during the Nazi vilifying of Jews in the early stages of the Holocaust (the history of which Mel's father, Hutton Gibson seeks to rewrite) ought to rethink their tacit condoning of Mel's "The Passion of the Christ" since its release in 2006. Which Christian leaders will publicly denounce Mel's version of deicide as not credible and unrepresentative of their theology?
