On Wednesday, September 28, Shimon Peres, the 9th and arguably the most high-profile president of Israel, passed away. For all the glare of the public spotlight and scrutiny to which he has been exposed, he remains in many ways, an enigmatic figure, comprised of seemingly impossible contradictions for historians to attempt to decipher.

Peres was laid to rest on Friday with all the pomp and ceremony that befits the funeral of a former head of state and public figure of international stature.

The 90-minute film tells the story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a Unitarian minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts, who left their children behind in the care of their parish and boldly committed to multiple life-threatening missions in Europe. The couple provided relief to embattled groups, raised money for refugee aid and smuggled Nazi targets, including children, out of the country. They are two of the five Americans who have been inducted by Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust museum, as Righteous Among the Nations.

Over two dangerous years they helped to save hundreds of imperiled political dissidents and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation across Europe. “The story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp is one of the most incredible tales of compassion, sacrifice and heroism that I have ever heard, and I was completely unaware of it until five years ago when Artemis Joukowsky first shared it with me,” said Ken Burns. “Nearly three years before America as a nation became involved in the Second World War, these two unassuming, so-called ‘ordinary’ Americans gave up everything they knew and loved and risked their lives to become involved in a war 4,000 miles away because they knew there were people in grave danger who needed help.” 


On Oct. 7, 2015 the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum presented “Two Who Defied the Nazis” as the 7th annual, Linda and Tony Rubin Lecture.  The program, a timely reminder of what refugees endure, was held at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles. The Sharps' remarkable actions are documented in a collection of personal papers that have been donated to the Museum. 

The Museum’s Western Regional Director, Steve Klappholz and the Defying's director and filmmaker (and Sharp grandson) Artemis Joukowsky appeared.  Mr. Klappholz (in a prepared statement) wrote,  “We are fortunate to have such a high-caliber film produced by Ken Burns to learn about the heroics of these two individuals and to better understand their challenges and struggles during what was the beginning of such a bleak time in Europe.” JewTube.Info spoke with him at the event.

Artemis Joukowsky, a film producer and co-founder of No Limits Media, is the grandson of Waitstill and Martha Sharp and has spent decades researching their story. He is the author of a companion book to the film, featuring a foreword by Ken Burns, published by Beacon Press.
“Beyond the cloak-and-dagger suspense of my grandparents’ experience, it is a story of what America meant to refugees fleeing war-torn countries to build new lives. And it underscores what Waitstill would call ‘a collaborative effort’ of how a small but effective underground network of rescue workers saved as many lives as they could, and how important that lesson is for what is happening today,” said Mr. Joukowsky.

According to the governments in Jerusalem and Washington, this was a great week for the U.S.-Israel relationship. The two countries arrived at a "memorandum of understanding" to extend the U.S. subsidy of Israel's military budget until 2028. President Barack Obama, no fan of Israel's current leader, declared: "America's commitment to Israel's security is unshakable."

It would be pleasant to believe this. It's not true though. America's commitment to Israel's security is quite shakable. Indeed, Obama has done much of the shaking. That reminder puts the new memorandum into perspective.

For much of Obama's presidency, he said he would lift sanctions on Iran in exchange for Iran dismantling its nuclear infrastructure. This was a big part of how he dissuaded Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, from bombing Iran's nuclear facilities.

But that's not the deal the U.S. and other nations struck with Iran. Obama ended up agreeing to legitimize and legalize Iran's nuclear infrastructure and to lift limits on production of nuclear fuel after 15 years. When Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu protested Obama's Iran bargain to Congress, the White House quietly encouraged fellow Democrats to boycott his speech.   

After all of this bad blood, in the last months of his administration, Obama has decided to sign an agreement with Israel that guarantees $3.8 billion per year between 2018 and 2028. On paper it seems generous. As Susan Rice, Obama's national security adviser, said Wednesday, this is the "single largest pledge of military assistance -- to any country -- in American history."

The fine print tells a different story. The key word in Rice's statement is "pledge." Congress is the body that appropriates the annual aid budget. When Obama is long gone, it will be Congress that doles out the money for Israel to spend on U.S. military equipment. So one aspect of the aid deal should raise eyebrows: terms saying that Israel will stop making its case directly to Congress for military aid.

Morris Amitay, a former executive director of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or Aipac, told me he had never before heard of a president asking a sovereign country, as part of an aid package negotiation, not to lobby Congress.

But, the word has gotten out that not only does Jeff's offer only kosher franks and sausages, they are a better meal than Dodger Dogs. Not only do they have brown mustard for their custom buns, they serve sauerkraut- and they'll even grill peppers and onions to top your wurst.

The movie "None Shall Escape" (screening at Hollywood's "CineCon" on Friday afternoon) opened the door tor showing Jewish characters and Holocaust issues, according to film historian, Stan Taffel. It's coincidental that within the same week of the screening, the world lost 3 iconic Jewish actors: Fyvush Finkel, 93, veteran of Yiddish theater and both the small and big-screens; Stephen Hill, 94, the orthodox Jewish star of "Mission: Impossible" and "Law and Order;" and 83-year old Gene Wilder,

who portrayed Jewish characters Leo Bloom in "The Producers," and Rabbi Avram Belinsky in "The Frisco Kid."

Producer, Mace Neufeld may be best-known for having produced Tom Clancy's "Jack Ryan" political thrillers. At the Israeli Film Festival 2014, we asked him background about his 1979 classic,"The Frisco Kid" which starred Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford. We asked him why since that release are films which depict Jewish life and customs, as he did with "The Frisco Kid," so rare.


"None Shall Escape" (1944) was the first American movie which depicted European anti-Semitism and Holocaust activities. It was screened by the L.A. Jewish Film Festival this spring.

CineCon (running in Hollywood September 1st through Labor Day) will screen this seminal, American-produced, anti-Semitism expose, "None Shall Escape" with a visit from co-star, Marsha Hunt. 

CineCon VP Stan Taffel explains that this film paved the way for Charlie Chaplin to become the first Hollywood star to produce a movie with an anti-Nazi message. This opened the door for others to address anti-Semitism in and after World War II in motion pictures.

Mr. Taffel discusses the irony of Max Davidson a German film actor known for his comedic. Jewish persona during the silent film era. In an article on Laurel-and-Hardy.com, hstorian Richard Bann asserts that Davidson's career was scuttled by MGM chiefs Louis B. Mayer and Nicholas Schenck, who objected to his portrayal of a stereotypical (and more importantly, unassimilated) Jew and forced Roach to terminate him shortly after sound arrived. 

As the three who passed this week have proven, the role of the Jew in American film and TV has come a long way.

Some Arabs want Egyptian judo to scrap scheduled Olympics match vs. Jewish-Israeli at Rio Olympics

An Egyptian judoka is being pressured on social media not to show up for his scheduled Friday-afternoon fight against an Israeli contender at the Olympics in Rio, the Hebrew news site nrg reportedon Thursday. 

According to the report, in spite of repeated assertions from the chairman of the Egyptian Olympic Committee that Islam El Shehaby will appear on the mat for his slated match against Israeli judoka Or Sasson – going as far as to warn the athlete that, if he fails to do so, his Egyptian citizenship will be revoked – calls from fans on Facebook and Twitter for him to shun the fight have been intensifying.

“You will shame Islam,” wrote one angry follower. “If you lose, you will shame an entire nation and yourself. We don’t want to think what will happen if you lost to an Israeli. Victory will give you nothing. How can you cooperate with a murderous nation?” 

El Shehaby , who is known for his extreme anti-Israel views, told Egyptian media outlets that he would make his decision closer to the fight. “The situation is very sensitive,” he said. “And I don’t want to discuss it.” 

The 2010 World Judo Championship bronze medalist in the over-100-kilo category is supposed to fight Sasson, winner of two silver medals — one in 2015 and a second in 2016 — in the European championships. 

According to nrg, Israeli Minister of Culture and Sport Miri Regev called on Egypt to “respect the spirit of the Olympics and act accordingly.” She also called on the International Olympic Committee to prevent the games from being “tainted by politics.” 

The controversy surrounding El Shehaby is not the first incident of its kind at the Olympic Games in Brazil. 

On August 5, the Lebanese delegation to the games refused to share a bus meant to take the athletes to the opening ceremony with the Israeli team. Subsequently, on Aug. 7, Saudi Arabian judoka Joud Fahmy forfeited her first-round match against Christianne Legentil from Mauritius, reportedly in order to avoid competing against Israeli contender Gili Cohen in the next round.

Rabbi Moshe Parry spoke about the authorities' downplaying the Muslim-terror risk to minorities, then and now, and avoiding addressing the special protection Jews and Israelis require.

Patricia Johnson, a SoCal public-relations professional who helped lead the Israel-Christian Nexus- a pioneering effort in catalyzing Zionistic Christian and Jewish relations, died Monday, June 6th after a long-battle with Type1 Diabetes. Ms. Johnson was a regular at the Church on the Way in Van Nuys, California, founded by Dr. Jack Hayford who was also instrumental in the activities of the I.C.N. 

CrossMap reported her death through American News Service on June 16th in "Patricia Johnson, ‘A True Lover and Supporter of The Jewish State of Israel and The Jewish People,’ Has Passed onto Her Eternal Reward" by Dan Wooding.

There was no one more devoted and loyal than Patricia - our liaison to the Christian community, a true lover and supporter of the Jewish State of Israel and the Jewish People - God’s people - a person who has blessed us so much, with her entire being. JooTube reported the Christian support for Gen. Erem, when video-chronicling at his memorial service, four years ago.  Zionistic Christian leaders, including Pastors John Hagee, Robert Stearns, and Jim Tolle join Jews in eulogizing Israeli Gen. Shimon Erem, founder of Israel-Christian Nexus.




During the 2012 Gaza Crisis, at a rally in Los Angeles, Patricia Johnson explained Evangelical Christians' commitment to support Israel in good-works as well as beliefs.

In his obituary article, Dan Wooding quotes Rabbi Yitzchok Adlerstein, Director, Interfaith Affairs at The Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles:

"I don't think I can remember Patricia without a smile on her face and boundless energy in her step. Many years ago, when invited for the first time to a meeting of a group of evangelical Christians who supported Jews and the Jewish State, it was Patricia who took me under wing. Her presentation of her beliefs - which, at their core, could be reduced to unyielding confidence in the Word of G-d - were not only an eye-opener, but changed me for life. She continued for many years to be the point-person in building bridges between our two communities."

Will jihad against latino LGBT's finally awaken "progressives" to their common-cause with Jews and Israel?

Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu released these remarks on the jihad massacre of homosexuals in Orlando, Florida, Saturday night, 11 June.

"In Orlando, a terrorist walks into a nightclub and murders nearly 50 human beings. Sons and daughters, brothers and sisters cut down in cold blood. They did nothing wrong. They were dancing with friends, they were enjoying music with loved ones. Why did the terrorist murder them? Because he was driven by a fanatical hatred. He targeted the LGBT community because he believed they were evil. 

Now, the murderer wasn't alone. Regimes and terrorist organizations around the world ruthlessly persecute the LGBT community. In Syria, ISIS throws gays off rooftops. In Iran, the regime hangs gays from cranes. Too many people have remained silent in the face of this awful persecution. 



This week's shooting wasn't merely an attack on the LGBT community. It was an attack on 
all of us, on our common values of freedom and diversity and choice. Radical Islamist terror makes no distinction between shades of infidel. This week it was gays in Orlando. A few days before that it was Jews in Tel Aviv. Before that it was music fans in Paris; Travelers in Brussels; Yazidis in Iraq; Community workers in San Bernardino; Christians and journalists in Syria. All of us are targets.

We believe that all people are created in the image of God. ISIS, by contrast, believes that all people who aren't just like them deserve to die. We will not be terrified into submission. We will fight back. And we will triumph. 

Today I ask you to reach out to friends in the LGBT community. Comfort them. Tell them you stand together, we stand together as one. And that you will always remember the victims. Tell them they will never be alone, that we are all one family deserving of dignity, deserving of life. 

I have no doubt that those who seek to spread hate and fear will be defeated. Working together we will defeat them even faster. We need to stand united, resolute in the belief that all people regardless of their sexual orientation, regardless of their race, regardless of their ethnicity, all people deserve respect, deserve dignity."

At last year's IDEAS forum, David Dorfman introduced me to Mr. Shlomo Nimrodi, who serves as CEO of Ramot Business-Engagement Center at Tel Aviv University. 

Mr. Nimrodi explains how his initiative prospects innovation developed through Tel Aviv University researchers and cultivates it towards commercialization.
