Thousands of Israelis pray Selichot at Judaism's holiest site, the Wailing Wall in East Jerusalem

Thousands of people gathered on Monday night to pray at the holiest site in Jerusalem- in front of the Wailing (Western) Wall (remnant of the Second Temple) in the Old City of East Jerusalem.

With Rabbis leading prayers of penitence, called Slichot, thousands gathered before Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, which started on Tuesday 26 September.
